I'm looking into getting back into the swing of things. There was some discussion on the Discord of starting things up again. I want to see how serious this interest is, so I'm putting up a sign up thread.

Initial Synopsis

Two decades prior to the Lycia's reorganization into an empire, Sir Stavros Nemean, former mage general of Etruria, decided to spend his retirement by founding a school to teach the underpriveleged how to use magic. The New Aqueleia School of Magic was founded to educate the people living in Lycia's mountain range in order to end the cycle of banditry. However, the past year saw antagonism towards magic advance to the point of it being too dangerous to continue further. He attempted to keep the school running in secret, but the Church of Preservation and Sanctity has caught wind not just of the school, but of the headmaster's identity.

The school could not be saved, but Stavros needed time to hold off the inquisitors long enough for his students to escape to safety. He hired mercenaries to help in his endeavor. Ultimately though, he did not plan to leave this place alive...

In Etruria, after the conquest, Lycia sent some of its young lords to oversee the conquered territory, as rewards for 'valiant service' during the war. One of these, one Lord Pascal of Thria, was granted a large tract of land to steward for the Emperor. He's quickly proven himself to be as tyrannical as the Emperor he serves, meeting the slightest infraction with cruelty and sadistic punishment. He feasts himself on the work of his people, who are starting to starve as winter sets in. If he would return even a portion of the food he's claimed as taxation, the people under his thumb would survive, but he has not.

Ambrose has heard of this despicable man, and sees an opportunity for himself, and his Vanguard. And he's also heard of some troublemakers in the area...
So, this topic is more for a record of attendance than anything, though, feel free to discuss on the forums. God knows we need more activity on it.
So, iirc, here's the character list:
2. Tangle Rose (Gazetteer)
3. Priam Rhodes (Musketeer)

Deep in the southwest of the Lycian Empire, a horse's gallop from both the wastes of Nabata and the mountains demarcating the commonwealth of Etruria, lies the city of Tyrol. Formally considered Ostian territory, Tyrol has acted as a nexus for travelers between Lycia and the lands to the west. Quietly and slowly growing in the shadow of the Western Mountains, home to lucrative mines that export their bounty of salt and silver straight to Ostia, Tyrol is an obscurity to all but those who have business traveling through the area.

Following the conquest of Etruria, a grave threat appeared on Tyrol's doorstep: the western Lycian heartland was overrun by disgruntled mercenaries who had augmented the Lycian Army in the past to ensure that the massive invasion happened as quickly as possible. The mercenaries, insisting they had not been paid their proper dues in both money and feudal land ownership after the war resulted in total Lycian victory, refused to disperse and return to their homes and instead began an occupation of the countryside, removed just far enough from Ostia and the rest of the marches that no one has bothered to chase them out. It was simply more logical to let the mercenaries fester, with the Imperial leadership having the option to pay them to flock back to Lycian banners should their numbers be needed in future wars (never mind the potential cost in manpower that crushing the mercenaries might bring).

Even with this in mind, no one would have predicted that the massive host of landsknechte would grow organised enough to knock down the gates of Tyrol. The syndic of Tyrol, a glorified mayor with a cabinet of advisers nostalgic for the days before the Empire, decided on a clean surrender and allowed the takeover of the city by the mercenaries. The city is now headed by a mercenary captain who styles himself "grand commandant" after having removed fellow guild leaders who also jockeyed for the position of leader.

A few months following his takeover, the commandant now conducts a quiet search for daring souls who might undertake a perilous mission. Distrustful of the men within his own ranks, mercenaries who originally pledged allegiance only to gold and now grow restless behind the walls of Tyrol, he begins recruiting patrons of the Black Bear Inn, a cheap establishment known to be a favourite of rough-and-tumble glory-seekers. The inn's barkeep talks in riddles hinting at mountains, magic, and messengers, only revealing his benefactor's mission to those who press him for answers, for only the most eclectic and adaptable group of travelers can hope to succeed in this quest for wealth, power, and perhaps even a chance to strike against the Lycian Empire.
In this RP, we'll be traveling across some Ostian-held highlands in western Lycia in search of mages to bring into the country from Etruria and running into plenty of trouble along the way. Nichol has had a change of heart since the last RP he was in and will be joining the expedition. Post if interested!

The port of Badon was unlike much of the Lycian Empire. As a place of business, no one really cared where one was from or one’s beliefs. Only two questions mattered: do you have the money? Are you worth the money? Anyone who couldn’t answer in the affirmative to either had no business in Badon. Because of its focus on trade and business (and the money it brings in), the Lycian Empire had been more lenient on the city than the rest of the country. Not even a church was present.

It made Father Terran squirm just to set foot into town. The sin was everywhere!

Moreso when he stepped foot into Davros Inn. It reeked of smoke, liquor, and the unholy activities between men and women. The holy man clenched his body tightly, as if afraid to touch anything. Yet the Church demanded his presence there. The task that needed to be done could not be done by a priest. They needed a devil.

Wratt waved the priest over to his booth. As Terran sat down upon the sticky seat, his face scrunched up in discomfort. Wratt laughed loudly at the priest’s predicament. They both knew Wratt could laugh because of his success in his last few jobs. Not many mercenaries would work for the empire. Fewer that wouldn’t demand a small fortune for a job. Even fewer that would do the job well. Wratt Cervant, for all his misdeeds, got the job done. And if he didn’t, well, he wasn’t someone the Church would miss much.

“What’s the matter? Afraid a little sin will rub on you? That you might like it?” Wratt smiled as he took a sip of his ale.

“Can we please just get on with this?”

“Alright, alright,” Wratt put his mug down. “What’s the job this time?”

“Are you familiar with the island of Valor?”

“Dread Isle? That’s that foggy island sailors get superstitious about.”

“Yes, well, we need you to go there and find something.”

“Of course you do,” Wratt replied, rubbing his beard. Not many would sail to Dread Isle. Only the stupid would step foot on it. Stories of disappearing fleets were still told to this day. Apparently, they didn’t just spook the locals.

“Legend speaks of a Dragon’s Gate. At the end of the Scouring, the last dragons used it to escape our world and enter another. There are…accounts…that they could return through the same way.”

“This isn’t some ‘get the thing’ mission. This is a ‘bring the explosives’ mission.”

“Precisely,” Terran nodded. “Make sure legend stays legend. It is unholy ground. Burn the ruins to the ground if you have to.”

“Sounds like a job for multiple people. Lots of explosives, supplies to get across the island, a ship to get us there.”

“The Empire will compensate you and your crew handsomely, as usual. We would need you to start immediately.”

“Well, hold your horses. First, I need a crew…”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For this adventure, the Lycian Empire is hiring mercenaries to visit the Dread Isle, find the Dragon’s Gate, and blow it into rubble. Come along as we visit in-game locations and reveal what still hides behind the fog. Who knows, maybe we’ll meet some very old (skeletal) friends.

With "The Dead One Calls" wrapping up, I think it's time to introduce the next adventure for Paige, Satsume, Shad, Cecily, and the others. Their heroics in the previous thread have caught the attention of Bern nobility, who have extended an invitation to them to a lavish ball. The group will take a break from battles to relax.

This will be a social RP, so no big battles. I do hope to close the "Search for Lycia's Heir" storyline towards the end, but I want the focus of this RP to build relationships. Though this is a continuation of our group's adventures, this is a great point for new characters that happen to be in Bern to jump in.
Chime in if you want to throw your character in or have ideas on stuff to do.

Somewhere in northern Lycia, near the Sacaen border, a terrorist faction of hunted dark mages are rumored to have developed a means of striking back at the Lycian Emperor and his ruthless Keepers of Sanctity. By harnessing the powers of the dragonkin's mystical stones, and navigating past the traditional elder mage taboo of sanguimancy, their dark magic has grown strong enough to overwhelm the Keepers' wards. Considered a threat to the safety of Lycia and condemned even by anti-Lycia Etrurians for their extremist tendencies, the Church of the Preservation of Sanctity must move quickly to quash the heretic faction and restore their perceived peace to the region...

As was talked about in the Discord chat thread, Some of us are seeking to use our second character slots to bring in characters of a different perspective. We're talking villains, or rather those who benefit from a triumphant Lycian empire. Since there is a group somewhat interested, I figured it'd be cool to have a group of villains. I'll post some random thoughts of mine from the chat thread:

Quote:There needs to be a team of bounty hunters working for Lycia to make life hard for the good guys.

Quote:Maybe a resurgent Black Fang. Over a hundred years prior, the Black Fang promised a debt to Lycia after defeating Nergal. That debt was never claimed...until the current emperor. Now the group works to cause turmoil in Bern, weakening it enough for Lycia to strike.

New idea: A group that revisits game locations to recover legendary weapons for the empire. Obviously, all the magic ones will be "disgraces to Elimine" and be promptly destroyed.

Thoughts?

Basically starting off not far from where we were in Reclamation of Tania, the makeshift Vanguard makes their way towards the Bernese mountains in search of the Hyperion safe house. Ellie's been faced with severe opposition to her initial plan; she hopes luck is on their side in that they can convince the army to send a liaison in the form of her brother, Leroy Vael, but a part of her dreads the reunion. Until then, she does her best to stay on task, hoping Shad can point them safely in the right direction.

For many of us, death is something we meet in battle, at the hands of old age or due to disease. We don't always know which, and unless we're certain our actions are going to lead to our demise, we have no way of knowing what'll kill us in the end. No way of knowing what, and no way of knowing when. Many people would give almost anything to ascertain when they were no longer for this life, whilst some of us would rather it stay secret until the time comes.

What would you do if someone was trying to convince you of your impending death? You'd probably laugh and assume they'd had one too many a tankard or had hit their head rather hard. Who would you believe: a wise old man, a decorated churchman bathed in holy light, or perhaps a pretty woman you could play along with in order to swipe a favor from? No matter who it was, you'd have to wonder why they were telling you this. Maybe they're trying to scare you, or trick you.

Or maybe, just maybe... They could save your life.

Hello, readers!

I'm looking to begin a social RP for my character Anka: a dancer who can have odd fits in which she can see glimpses of the past, present or future, often without any real idea what these glimpses mean. I've mulled over how exactly I want to introduce her to the world of Insurrection, and I figured it'd be in a fairly low-impact way.

As a rough outline, I'm going to have Anka 'tell' something about a village mayor's son, and it'll have something to do with his death (which Anka is convinced will occur very soon). Of course, nobody will believe her insane mutterings, and will probably assume she's possessed and needs an exorcism. She'll be looking for a person or two to aid her in making sure the mayor's son avoids his untimely demise, whether or not he or his father want the help. There could be multiple 'red herrings', I'm thinking maybe two before they reach and maybe prevent the actual cause of his death.

So, would anyone be willing to believe a mad dancer's 'prediction'??

(I'm open for suggestions as to where the RP can be based: Anka is a wanderer but she was born in Thria)

Discussion - The Reclamation of Tania

It begins!

Bern has finally made a move. During the night, an outpost for the Keepers of Sanctity is attacked by a modest force of crack wyvern troops. The sounds of battle disrupt the nearby village. Citizens begin to panic, and the few surviving Keepers are desperately trying to escape and send word to the Lycian regiments in Araphen, that they might come and quash the attack.

The following day, the surrounding towns are awash with rumors and speculation. People occasionally point to the skies as wyverns circle about. Many herald them as saviors. Some fear that they are exchanging one tyrant for another. Lycian enforcers are beginning to have trouble maintaining order, and the church's Keepers are similarly harried. Tensions are high as Tania awaits reinforcements from the capital.

Event setting: The event RP starts on the morning after the attack, in one of the larger hubs of Tania, near the Araphen border. Everyone is anticipating the arrival of Lycian troops from Araphen (some advance units may even be trickling into the town already).

Concerning this thread: This thread shall be used to handle all OOC discussions. There is no limit on the number of characters allowed (except for NPCs, SWIFTY.) Please please PLEASE make sure to let everyone know if you are unable to post for an extended period of time.

Characters are free to come and go in this thread until the event concludes. Again - use this thread to juggle all of that.

Other RPs as they pertain to this one: Other, non-event RPs can continue as usual. You can use the same character in an event thread and a social RP thread concurrently. (Time-space paradoxes are fun!) Basically, the idea of the event thread is to gather everyone in one place, in-character. This in turn can open up opportunities for splinter RP groups once you find people to interact with.

Any logistical questions can be posted at the helpdesk. Any complaints can be directed to Cevian's PM box.

So I had a brain surge right as I was falling asleep last night (which seems to be the time when I have most of my great ideas). Given how barren the RP subforum is, I’m tempted to just do away with this IRP/SRP nonsense, get rid of the restrictions on how many RPs you can be in, and just advance the plot through a sticky’d megathread. People would be allowed to RP to their heart’s content outside of the megathread; those would be more of a “here is the general setting, go have an adventure in it” deal.

I’d still keep on top of those RPs and pluck the good points from each of them to factor into the overall plot, but everything would just be a bit more laid back. You know, even more than it already is, what with our one-and-a-half RP mods and no actual rules to enforce outside of the character limit. (Which Swifty is working around anyway thanks to his litany of NPCs.)

Anyone want to chime in on this?

Near the border of Santaruz, a regiment of Ostian zealots oppress the citizenry, in the name of the Emperor and the new church, of course. It's to hunt mages, scholars of so-called 'dark arts'. Or so they say. They confiscate valuables, any weapon that might be found, burn books oftentimes filled with subjects as mundane as cooking, steal money, and hang anyone who disagrees with their methods as traitors to the crown. Then, along came some travelers...
Bounty hunter isn't just kill, though. If there's a bounty on finding the son of a rich noblewoman who eloped with a farmhand, well, I'd be game.
Am hoping to find a partner for roleplay who'll be willing to discuss ideas, rather than me just laying down the plot and everyone being an accessory rather than a main character.

Beware; I hunger!... for more RP. Anyway, that should be enough references to diffuse the tension, soooo...

I was thinking of starting up an IRP based on characters who, for whatever reason, are sick of running away (for instance, my Renata deciding to face up against the servants of the Church who want to bring her to justice after she killed a bishop). We'd all run into each other in a village somewhere in eastern Lycia, attempt to rally some peasants/town guards to our cause, and then (against all common sense telling us to run) meet our enemies (priests, soldiers, bandits, or otherwise) in glorious battle as they come down on the village from all directions. Any Insurrection character with a grudge to fulfil is invited.

Sound like fun?

Cast:
