Paige was dumbfounded at Eli's two big reveal. This was the last thing she was expecting, what with Lycia and Bern going at it just outside their door. There was so much to ask, yet there was a voice telling them to leave this place. Upon closer inspection, it was Satsume upstairs, trying to find them. Paige grabbed a spare vulnerary from the shelf. She took Eli's (what was her name now?) hand and gently placed the potion.
"I really do want to talk about this," Paige began, "but if we don't leave now, we might not ever get to. Can you walk?"
Their conversation was interrupted by a cough. The Bern hostage had woken from his unconscious state. Paige ran over to check on him. His condition was deteriorating and the interrogation hadn’t even started yet. At the same time, the skirmish outside threatened to spill Lycian blood. She wasn’t ready to get a first-hand account of the impending war. Hoping to stop the battle before it got too violent, Paige grabbed the soldier’s arm, wrapping it around her shoulders.
“New plan. We’re getting you out of here.”
“No problem, lady…ah…”
As Paige helped the soldier up, she held a hand out to Ellie, urging her to stay put.
“Stay there for now, in case this doesn’t work.”
Paige and the soldier exited the backroom, a trail of blood dripping from the wounded. They were in the main room just as Alice was addressing the commander. Worst case scenario, Paige would wind with her own grievous wound for betraying the Lycians. If things worked out however, they could avoid further casualties.
“Soldiers of Bern!” Paige called out to the two remaining Bern fighters in the room. “Take your wounded and continue your fight outside town. There is no need to involve civilians. Fellow Lycians, let them pass so we can heal our own wounded.”
For once, she spoke with authority, despite not having a position in the army. It was the most logical solution considering the lives endangered by this move; she hoped others would agree.
