It could be a background element that can get expanded upon later into the rp. You know...as our characters earn more prestige for their deeds in the individual city states where they can actually influence things.

Re: Cities, it'd probably be like one or two until the need called for more, I just made the number a vague "handful" to give room for that. And I agree, going straight into politics would be kind of overwhelming. Maybe a couple of people who feel the need to get into it could, like Swift said, use the notoriety from their exploits to get into the intrigue.
