"Assuming the clergy believes the messenger, the villagers here will benefit from your bounty, Renata. I think striking Albert's head off in the night would only hurt their lives right now. Much as he is irritating, his death now will be proof that you are alive and that Roland and I have gone back on our word. Or at least that something is fishy here.
