Kethen followed more out of boredom than a sense of duty or obligation at this point. There wasn't going to be any bloodshed in the square so he contented himself with resting his axe on his shoulder. The group marched towards the castle forcing the mercenary to keep a sharp eye on the soldiers escorting them on their grim march.
It shocked the man when his temporary ward began to sing. He had heard of some people being able to look death in the face and laugh but those were few and far between and were generally half mad. So when one so young began sing on the road that could very well be the last she ever walked, Kethen was moved.
Then the smoke hit him in the face causing him to choke and sputter. He threw his free hand in front of his mouth in an effort to shield his lungs from the burning haze but it had little to no purpose. He staggered forward hoping to escape from the fumes.
