The horse neighed.
"Hey that's cheating! You can't use your animal sound as a-"
“Fellow Lycians! Lend me your ears! For I have a tale long forgotten, one lost by your oppressive rulers who would dare call themselves your masters!”
The man was yelling so loudly you could hear him for miles.
What is this? Some cult?
“Bah, too long have you been bombarded with lies! Glass was feared by the gods, for they knew he was destined for greatness! Glass started as an orphan, unaware that he was blah blah blah .... "
Ilia may have been secluded, but it still had its share of nutjobs.
(God, next he's going to say Juno turned an entire lake to ice.)
Kalin sort of drowned out the rest. She also had lots of practice in school.
"blah blah yap yap ... dribble dribble dribble ..." spouted the unknown voice from several buildings away.
She noticed a lot more shirtless, ugly, burly men wielding weapons than she had before. Had they always been there?
"blah blah legendary blade blah"
"Ooh legendary blade. I bet I could steal it and sell it for money."
*snort*
Kalin responded. "Oh aren't you such a white knight. Get off your high horse. Uh... no pun intended."
She was still trying to figure out who the men were.
"... blah blah conquering great brigand gangs blah ..."
"Oooooooh. That makes sense. Thanks mysterious voice!"
"Brigands are poor but their leader always seems to live nicely. I bet the leader of these guys is loaded." Kalin could smell money.
"Hey you! Ilians and their horses sell for a pretty penny. You're coming with us!"
Kalin, being lost in thought, didn't hear the man's yelling.
Maybe the mysterious voice would be willing to be her partner. That guy did seem to have some legendary blade after all. He could help her defeat the bandit leader and take his stuff. She decided to ride around the houses. "Let's go" she said as the pegasus moved for the location of the sound.
The pegasus, hearing both the man and Kalin, refusing to take this insult of being called a horse, complied…
"Hey you, stupid wench! Do you even-"
…and trampled the man as it charged across him.
Did she run across something? She noticed a man on the ground where she just was. Oh shit, this could be trouble, she thought. No reason to stop riding now. The cops would come any time. Out of the city it was. Guess she was going to live like the famous bandits of old, robbing caravans and narrowly escaping with her life each time. It sounded kind of exciting.
She looked back and noticed the burly, shirtless man getting up.
"Oh, whew. He's alright, false alarm!" She continued making for the square where the voice was coming from.
“Peace reigned under the rule of Glass, but it would not blah blah blah ... yap yap yap ... blah blah yap yap ... dribble blah ..."
She turned the corner and saw the man just in time to hear the end of his speech.
"All I ask is for you to donate gold, your worldly possessions, and your strongest lads to our cause.”
“I am just a poor, lowly pegasus knight. You guys should donate to me; specifically that legendary sword.” she whispered.
The pegasus, actually having a grasp of the situation, decided to just roll with it this time. He knew no amount of convincing was going to stop her. He also realized that her actions were in the right this time, even if she wasn't..
After taking a moment to look around, Kalin finally noticed the brigands who were soliciting money from the common folk.
“Oh... the cult leader is the leader of the brigands too. The plot thickens..."
“But geez, this town is dirt poor. No wonder I can’t find a job.”
Tuning out the noise in the background and most of the speech from the would-be savior of men, she heard an interesting line.
“I can see you need more convincing. Well, I do have proof. I have the blade passed down from my ancestor! Behold, the Kani Matti, the Sword of Souls!”
He pulled out the shiniest katana Kalin had ever seen.
“It’s blade was forged from dragon’s tears!”
(CHA-CHING! So that was the famous Kani Matti!)
She remembered reading about that in history class.
(Wait… was that really what it was called? Bah, whatever. Details details.)
Kalin noticed the cult leader arguing with some red-haired woman. The woman looked almost as out of place as herself. It was apparent she took care of herself more than the rest of the people here. Unlike the cult leader, she hadn’t been screaming off of the top of her lungs, so Kalin didn’t notice until now.
Kalin figured she’d nab the sword while he was preoccupied with the woman. Flying high into the air, she prepared to swoop down. She put on her lucky goggles and praised the knights for giving her gloves with enhanced grip. No way was she going to mess this up.
The red-haired woman said something in response, but being so high in the air, Kalin couldn’t quite make it out. The woman looked like she was in trouble, being surrounded, but the stocky monster of a man with similarly-colored hair clad in armor a couple feet away from her (a brother?) gave the look that this was not the case.
“Ready… Aim… Fi-”
A loud sound erupted from a glass statue next to the man as it exploded and parts of it fell off.
Kalin regained her composure. The cult leader looked even more distracted now.
"Let's try that again... Ready... Aim... Fire!"
Arm extended to grab the sword, she proceeded to fly towards the cult leader at mach speed…
