So i have played through about half of shadow dragon, but after rwading in the fourms of the love FE4 gets, i want to play it. Would i miss anything by starting it up now? Or what would you recommend?
Should. Probablymention i have. Finished both awakening and FE7

It's quite the case of Guide Dang It, it is. If you don't sort that problem out you'll miss a lot, but otherwise you should play it sooner rather than later. You're not missing a thing by waiting.
I recommend using Serene's item list to make sure you get everything each chapter.
The game has an inheritance system and two generations. The second generation inherits shit from the first. Every mother (except Diadora) has two kids associated with them. You can choose the father (except for Diadora and Ethlin, who have Sigurd and Cuan respectively). Awakening is a lot like this, but it's still quite different. Bases aren't worth as much in this game for inheritance, but growths are worth a lot, lot more (it's the reverse in awakening). You also pass down items. Each character passes down legendary weapons and every item their child can use in their base class. Everything else is lost.

I would rush shadow dragon using warp staves (all chapters are seize) so you ca experiece the story. Then move to FE4
Or. Try FE4 prologue, if you can bear the pain of the pace of the gameplay/story (only 10 chapters but you might spend 30+ minute in every chapter) go for it and drop SD.
