Name: Marceline of Badon
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Nation/Allegiance: Lycian-born Pirate!!!

Appearance/Description:
Marceline might look the figurative fish out of the water, but she certainly won't act like one. Everything about her, from her sun-dried, patchwork clothes, to the smell of salt in her fiery red hair, and yes, even that eyepatch behind that mess of locks, tells everyone where she comes from. And she's damn proud to be an outlaw. Wherever she walks, on the deck of a ship or on land, she moves with a swagger that tells everyone she owns the place and speaks in a voice loud enough rile a crowd. If anyone finds a problem with her antics, they can soon see she could back up her sass with the way she swings her staff.

A life on the run has made her haggard, more cutthroat and desperate to make ends meet, to make a difference within a nation set against her. She's never been too sympathetic to any of the Lycian fiefs outside her native Badon, but with her recent losses, her crusade against them has become a lot more personal. Some ask her how revenge could push her this far, to make her consider terrible things that even she wouldn't have done in her pirate days. Bluntly, she would tell you that revenge alone isn't enough. But survivor's guilt sure adds up to a lot.

Bio/Backstory:
There's a story they tell as whispers in Badon, about a redwood ship with red-striped sails that sails between the Lycian coast and the Missur peninsula. Her flags fly no color except black, a pirate ship that hunt ships of value for their gold and weapons. In the name of justice, the storytellers loves to stress. For the Ruby, her red-haired captain, and her stalwart crew prey on those who prey on others. They plunder from the rich and give to the poor, they fight off would-be raiders and provide aid and healing to those affected by them. Classic anti-hero stuff.

Captain Marceline and the Pirates of the Ruby are practically legends in Badon. Legends that, frankly, Lycia would put you on the chopping block for if you speak of them aloud. But the people of Badon still do, as defiantly as they could. They believe in their heroes still.

Marceline once grew up in a covenant in her hometown, an orphan born to a cloistered life with St. Elimine. But a sense of adventure overrode any sense of piety she had, and she sold her services as a healer and staff user in exchange for a ship that took her from Lycia to various sea routes across Elibe. Port to port, she met many lovely people, stumbled into a lot of adventures, and fought many, many injustices with nothing but ragged clothes and a cleric staff. She soon proved herself a resourceful person and strong leader in her own right.

When she helped the ship's captain uncover an ancient pirate's fortune in Missur, she got a large share of gold in compensation. Marceline decided she wanted to own her own ship, and so parted away with her captain in good terms and with some of the friends she made from her former crew. She poured everything on the Ruby, right down to the lovely color of the ship's sails, and began what she considered as "heroic piracy" to pursue her love of adventure and justice. And as it turned out, with a strong voice and powerful healing magic, she made for a really good captain.

And the rest, you would think, is legend. But then the war happened.

When magic users and refugees attempted to escape Lycia en masse, she offered her ship as a way to smuggle them to Bern. From them, Marceline heard first-hand accounts of the horrors that plagued the mainland. Their stories shocked the sea-weary captain to her core, from the witch hunts, to the annexation, to the absolute destruction of the Elimine Church. And to think that if she stayed in that covenant, she would have joined this mad new religion that swept the nation. She wanted to join the fight against them, somehow.

The Lycian navy found her first. They knew well of her reputation and planted a saboteur amidst her last batch of refugees. When the spy lit the signal, a squadron of ships dogged the Ruby all the way to the western Lycian coast. Surrounded and cut off from supplies, she allowed the refugees to escape with the longboats, while her crew held off the pursuit to the last. The Ruby and her crew fought with loyalty, valor, and fury, which it made the inevitable end even more painful for Marceline.

The Lycians made sure to burn every corner of the Ruby, save her sails. The sails, they gave to the people of Badon. a painful reminder that their loyalty and worship belonged to the crown, not to rebels like her.

That was a few weeks ago. The navy was sure that every crew member died with the ship. That was, until they heard word of a razed supply camp not far from where the Ruby sank. The only evidence of sabotage was a patch of a black flag that was pinned for all to see.

On land, alone, and struggling, Captain Marceline sails yet with her black flags. And as long as she does, Lycia knows that they won't ever be rid of her.
